Thackeray and Thackeray Alliance Analyzed

Two leaders, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, recently announced a new partnership. This alliance involves the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for the upcoming elections on January 15th, specifically for the Mumbai city council (BMC). This move ends a period where many people had been wondering if these two groups would work together.

Key Points

  • Sena & MNS forming alliance for BMC elections on Jan 15th.
  • New Mumbai mayor will be Marathi, according to Raj Thackeray.
  • Seat sharing finalized for Nashik Municipal Corporation’s polls.
  • Sena (UBT) may contest 145-150 BMC seats.
  • MNS could field 65-70 candidates in Mumbai.
  • Congress won’t contest BMC, focusing on individual campaigns.

Details of the Alliance

Raj Thackeray, who leads the MNS, stated that the next mayor of Mumbai will be someone who speaks the Marathi language and comes from the combined Sena and MNS group. However, they haven’t figured out exactly how many seats each group will get. Talks are still happening about how the votes will be divided across Mumbai.

Uddhav Thackeray, who leads the Shiv Sena (UBT), confirmed that a plan for sharing the votes has been made for the Nashik Municipal Corporation. This corporation is also holding elections on the same day as Mumbai. Discussions continue for other cities and towns throughout Maharashtra.

Reports suggest the Shiv Sena (UBT) intends to fight around 145 to 150 of the seats in Mumbai. The MNS is planning to put up candidates in approximately 65 to 70 of those same seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) is likely to get 10 to 12 seats.

The MNS says their supporters and the Sena’s supporters are happy with the alliance and believe they’ll work well together. Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said they won’t be working with the Indian National Congress in these elections, and the Congress party will try to win votes on its own.

Ultimately, this alliance is a strategic move to gain control of Mumbai’s government.
