RBI’s Rs 2,000 Withdrawal: A Key Change Analyzed
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) made a significant move on May 19, 2023, by removing the Rs 2,000 banknote from circulation. Banks were allowed to accept these notes for deposit or exchange until October 7, 2023. This action resulted in a dramatic reduction of this currency in the economy.
Key Points
- RBI stopped using Rs 2,000 notes on May 19, 2023.
- Banks accepted returns until October 7, 2023, for exchange.
- Initial circulation was Rs 3.56 trillion, a massive amount.
- Most of the Rs 2,000 notes have now been taken out.
- Current circulating amount is now Rs 5,743 billion.
- This action changed the amount of money in the country.
Initially, there were approximately Rs 3.56 trillion (that’s 3.56 followed by 12 zeros!) of Rs 2,000 notes being used. The RBI wanted to limit the amount of cash in the system. As of November 29, 2023, the amount that remained in circulation dropped to just Rs 5,743 crore (that’s 5,743 followed by 9 zeros!).
This means that an incredible 98.39% of the original Rs 2,000 notes have now been returned to the banks. The success of this action shows that people quickly reacted to the change.
Ultimately, the RBI’s decision successfully reduced the presence of a high-denomination currency.
