The OIL Crisis Management Team worked closely with specialists from Cudd Well Control (based in the USA) and the GeoEnpro Petroleum team. Their immediate priority was to carefully remove the damaged Blowout Preventer (BOP) from the wellhead. This was a particularly dangerous task, requiring extreme precision and coordination.
Once the BOP was safely removed, a ‘capping stack’ – a specialized piece of equipment – was carefully positioned directly over the well. This stack acted like a lid, redirecting all the escaping gas upwards and ensuring that the well was completely sealed.
