Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana: National Rural Livelihoods Mission Analyzed

The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) is a big project helping people living in rural India. It’s run by the Indian government and focuses on helping poor families earn more money. The program does this by putting people into groups and giving them support to start businesses and find jobs. Essentially, it’s about giving people the tools to build a better life for themselves.

  • Massive investment: Over 11 trillion rupees distributed to women groups.
  • Community Groups: SHGs provide crucial financial and support networks.
  • Women-Focused: Empowers women farmers and builds economic power.
  • Diverse Livelihoods: Supports both farm and non-farm employment.
  • Training & Support: KrishiSakhi & PashuSakhi offer expert guidance.
  • Global Impact: One of the world’s largest poverty alleviation efforts.

The program started in 2010 and was originally called the Swarnajayanti Grameen Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY). It’s funded by both the central and state governments. A key part of the mission is creating Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups are made up of poor families, especially women.

These groups get help with money, training, and selling their products. The goal is for the families to slowly earn more income and escape poverty. The mission focuses on empowering women in particular, recognizing their important role in rural communities.

DAY-NRLM supports both farming and other types of work. This includes helping ‘Mahila Kisans’ – women farmers – use good farming methods and improving the land. Around 4.62 million women have been part of these projects.

To help the farmers, trained helpers called KrishiSakhi and PashuSakhi are on hand. They give farmers advice and support all year round. These helpers work to help these women farmers, and support their businesses.

“Investing in rural livelihoods is investing in a stronger, more prosperous India.”
