Coal Supply Improvements Analyzed
Coal India (CIL) is working hard to make sure the coal they deliver is consistently high quality. They’re doing this by using new machines and systems to load coal, and they’re getting help from outside experts to check the quality. This is important because coal is used to make electricity, and it needs to burn properly!
Key Points
- CIL uses new machines to load coal for better quality.
- Independent experts (TPSAs) test the coal at loading points.
- Consumers choose their own expert to assess coal quality.
- Over 375 million tons of coal have been tested yearly.
- Coal quality has increased to 85% due to new measures.
- Real-time online analysis is being introduced for faster results.
How CIL is Improving Coal Quality
CIL is using a system with special silos and machines to load coal. These machines automatically take samples, which means there’s less chance of mistakes from people. This helps make sure the coal is exactly how it should be, and reduces problems for companies that use the coal.
To make sure the coal is good, CIL asks independent organizations called Third Party Sampling Agencies (TPSAs) to take samples and test them. These TPSAs are managed by Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFCL) and help ensure a fair check of the coal’s quality, as required by agreements with buyers.
The Results So Far
Since December 2026, CIL has sent out about 375 million tons of coal using trains. Half of that was loaded using silos, and machines automatically took samples. They’re aiming to send out 80% of coal through silos in the future, which will continue to improve the coal’s quality.
Because of the tests, CIL is doing a better job – about 85% of the coal meets the required standards. This is an improvement from 82% last year at the same time. They’re also using computers to analyze the coal in real time, making the whole process faster and more transparent.
Challenges and What CIL is Doing
Indian coal is naturally mixed, so even coal from the same mine can have slightly different qualities. Because of this, it’s rare for two samples taken from different places to have exactly the same heat value. However, CIL is focused on using technology to solve this problem.
“By embracing technology and independent verification, Coal India is committed to delivering consistently high-quality coal to its customers.”
