Tata Power and Druk Green Power: Hydropower Project Analyzed
Tata Power has teamed up with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to build a big new hydropower project in Bhutan. This project, called Dorjilung, will create a lot of clean electricity. It’s a really important deal that will help both India and Bhutan get more power.
Key Points
- Tata Power & DGPC build 1,125 MW hydropower in Bhutan.
- Project uses six 187.5 MW units on Kurichhu River.
- Joint ownership: Tata Power (40%), DGPC (60%).
- Investment: Tata Power contributes Rs 1,572 crore.
- Bhutan’s second-largest hydro project, major PPP.
- Commissioning planned for September 2031, 80% to India.
The Dorjilung project is like a giant water tank that collects water and then releases it to make electricity. It uses six powerful turbines, each producing 187.5 megawatts. This helps to ensure a steady supply of clean power when people need it most.
Tata Power is investing about 1.572 billion rupees (Rs) in the project. The money will be given to Druk Green Power Corporation over time, according to a plan they’ve agreed on. This shows a strong commitment from Tata Power to make this project a success.
The whole project will cost around 13.1 billion rupees (Rs). It’s a big investment, but it’s also a very smart one. It’s considered Bhutan’s second-largest hydro project, and the biggest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) hydro project ever undertaken in the country.
When the Dorjilung project is finished, it will be part of Tata Power. This means Tata Power will have a stronger presence in the area where they are building the power plant.
The project is being helped by the World Bank, which means it’s part of a global effort to promote clean energy. The project is scheduled to be finished in September 2031.
A large portion, 80%, of the electricity produced will be sent to India, improving the country’s energy supply. This collaboration highlights the importance of international partnerships for sustainable energy solutions.
“This hydropower project demonstrates the power of collaborative partnerships for a cleaner, more secure energy future.”
