Stock Market Holiday Analysis – Diwali 2025
Diwali, a major holiday in India, will impact the stock market in 2025. Because of this, investors need to know when the market will be open or closed. The stock exchanges, BSE and NSE, will remain open on October 20th, the main day of Diwali celebrations. However, they will close on October 21st and 22nd due to Diwali Lakshmi Puja and Balipratipada.
Key Points
- NSE open on Oct 20th, Diwali celebrations.
- Markets closed Oct 21st for Lakshmi Puja.
- Oct 22nd is a holiday for Balipratipada.
- Muhurat Trading session on Oct 21st, 1:45-2:45 PM.
- New Samvat year 2082 starts on Diwali.
- Market performance weak, FPI selloff continues.
A special “Muhurat Trading” session will happen on October 21st from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM. This is a special time for investors to trade, based on tradition. It’s a short trading period, adding to the festive spirit.
Last year’s Muhurat Trading session was also from 6 PM to 7 PM. This year’s session marks the start of a new Hindu calendar year, called “Samvat 2082”. The Hindu calendar year starts on Diwali.
Currently, the stock market is performing relatively weakly. The Nifty50 is up about 6.5%, while the other indices are showing different results. This is the weakest market performance in a Samvat year since 2078.
Despite this, there has been a lot of new company listings. 332 companies have gone public, raising over ₹1.55 trillion. This fundraising activity is a positive sign, even if the overall market is struggling.
“Understanding these market holidays is crucial for successful investment planning.”
