Life Insurance Market Shift Analyzed

Key Points

  • Private insurers grew 7.7% in premium sales.
  • LIC’s growth slowed significantly at 31.8%.
  • New business growth (WRP) favors private firms.
  • GST changes could benefit private insurers’ gains.
  • Brokerages like Nuvama recommend HDFC and SBI Life.
  • Market share is shifting towards Axis and HDFC Life.

The Life Insurance Council recently released data for September 2025, revealing a noticeable change in the life insurance market. This data shows that private life insurance companies are growing much faster than the largest insurer, LIC. This shift is causing brokerages like Nuvama Institutional Equities to adjust their recommendations.

Private insurers saw their individual annualised premium equivalent (APE) increase by 7.7% compared to the previous year. This is a significant difference from LIC, which experienced a drop of 31.8% in its individual APE. This means that more people are choosing private companies for their life insurance needs.

Another measure, called the individual weighted received premium (WRP), also shows the trend. Private insurers experienced 7.7% growth in WRP, while LIC’s growth was only 1%.

Brokerages like Nuvama are taking notice. They’re recommending that investors buy shares in HDFC Life Insurance Company and SBI Life Insurance Company. They believe these companies will continue to grow as the government introduces changes that make life insurance more affordable.

One of the biggest factors driving this shift is a change in the rules about taxes. A temporary exemption on taxes for individuals is helping private insurers gain market share. However, companies will need to adjust their pricing and processes to handle the temporary changes.

Other insurers like Axis Max Life and Bajaj Allianz Life are also seeing growth. These trends are making them popular choices for investors. The Life Insurance Council’s data clearly indicates a market realignment.
