Larsen & Toubro’s Pumped Storage Project Analyzed

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a big construction company, has won a huge job to build India’s largest pumped storage project. Torrent Energy Storage Solutions, previously known as Torrent PSH 3, hired L&T to create the 3000 MW Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project. What’s a Pumped Storage Project?

A pumped storage project uses two large reservoirs at different elevations. During times when there’s extra electricity (like when many people aren’t using energy), water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the higher one. This stores energy like a giant battery. Then, when there’s a need for more electricity (like during a hot day when many people use air conditioning), the water flows back down to the lower reservoir, turning turbines to generate power.
