Silver Price Fluctuations
Silver prices tumbled significantly on Wednesday. MCX Silver futures dropped by 6%, and global spot prices fell by 7.56%. This decline was caused by several factors, including increased trading costs (margin hikes), investors selling off positions (forced deleveraging), tax considerations (year-end tax harvesting), and limited trading activity (thin liquidity).
Analyst Ponmudi R of Enrich Money explained that the price drop was due to these factors, and that if the price stayed above $70.40, the situation would remain corrective. He suggested that if the price drops below $70.40, there could be a short-term reversal towards $65, or if it goes above $78.67, it could signal a continuation of the upward trend.
Hindustan Zinc’s Position
Hindustan Zinc is the only publicly traded Indian company that produces silver. It operates one of the world’s top five silver mines. They produce around 700 tonnes of silver each year, which is a major part of their profits. Currently, silver contributes 41.5% of their total profit, a consistent 41% over Q1 and Q2 of FY26.
Future Outlook
Because Hindustan Zinc has secured contracts to sell 37% of its silver production for the second half of FY26 at $37 per ounce, the company is expected to see a significant boost to its profits (EBITDA) in FY27 when silver prices are higher. This will create a significant impact on earnings.
“Understanding these market fluctuations is crucial for navigating Hindustan Zinc’s financial performance.”
