Indian Banking Sector Analyzed: A Snapshot
The Reserve Bank of India recently published a report on how the Indian banking industry was doing. This report looks at banks, co-operative banks, and other financial companies from 2024-25 and the first part of 2025-26. It’s like a check-up to see how healthy the banking system is.
Key Points
- Strong banking growth driven by significant balance sheet expansion.
- Deposits and loans increased quickly, though a little slower than before.
- Banks hold plenty of capital, reducing risk effectively.
- Bad loans (non-performing assets) are at their lowest level ever.
- Banks are making good profits, boosting their performance considerably.
- Urban co-ops and NBFCs also show improving financial health.
Performance of Commercial Banks
The commercial banks in India were strong and steady throughout 2024-25. They grew a lot, thanks to more money being deposited and lent out. This growth was a bit slower than the year before, but still a good sign.
Banks were careful with their money, keeping a good balance between the money they held and the money they lent. The ratio of capital to assets was 17.4% at the end of March 2025 and 17.2% at the end of September 2025, which shows they’re well-prepared for any challenges.
Improving Loan Quality
Banks are getting better at managing loans. The amount of money that’s not being repaid (bad loans) is dropping dramatically. At the end of March 2025, only 2.2% of loans were bad, and that number went down even further to 2.1% by the end of September 2025 – this is a record low.
Profitable Banks
Indian banks are making money! Their return on assets (RoA) was 1.4% and return on equity (RoE) was 13.5% in 2024-25. Even in the first half of 2025-26, these numbers remained strong at 1.3% and 12.5% respectively.
Urban Co-operative Banks and NBFCs
Things are also improving for urban co-operative banks and non-banking financial companies. These banks grew faster than before, improved their ability to handle bad loans, and built up their financial strength.
Strong financial health across key segments indicates a resilient and growing Indian banking sector.
